BEETLES

Order Coleoptera, the insect order containing beetles, has close to 400,000 different

species contained within 166 families.  Beetles are distinguished by their tough outer

wings called elytra which protect small membranous wings underneath.  Most are plant

eaters that thrive in a wide variety of habitats.  Beetles remain today the most prolific

and successful species of insects on the planet.
