CRUSTACEA The Crabs, Lobsters and Shrimp

Crabs along with lobsters, shrimp, and even barnacles are organisms belonging to the subphylum of arthropods called Crustacea.  There are over 50,000 different species, all of which possess a hard exterior exoskeleton with most residing in the aquatic salt water habitats of the world.  They are prized mainly as a global food source for both humans as well as other animals.  The largest mammal on Earth, the Blue Whale, dines exclusively on one of the smallest crustacea, the Krill.  Humans have developed a taste for crustacea with tens of millions of tons being consumed annually.
